Lakshmi : Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity

31 Oct

Lakshmi is considered Goddess of wealth but also of splendour in many legendary renderings “It is quite believable that, due to the underlying human aspiration for rich and splendour, she took in a huge number of folk elements during her expansion into a extensively accepted member of the pantheon”.

She is being linked with prosperity, riches, and land, appear to be associated with agriculture produce as well.

Her one name is ‘Ramana’, that means who roams about everywhere. ‘Ramana’ also means to be lost in, immersed, absorbed and engrossed.

her link with the earth has already been hinted at. Some brains believe that at the beginning when land was the only occupancy worth the name, Lakshmi and Bhudevi were one. Subsequently on when , stone (Diamond), gold, jewelry and other wealth appeared more precious for the ancients they analyze Lakshmi from Bhudevi.

Though she is loved by all, with the categorizing of the society into four categories by Manu she became the chosen goddess of the entrepreneurs and business men. She is specifically worshiped at Deepawali which is a specific festival of this class. A large number of legends proclaim that the lakshmi emanated from the ocean on this very day. Diwali is much more deeper than this simple descriptions.

Lighting lamps on Deepawali night has an astronomical cum psychological reason. According to the Indian astrology the sun becomes weakest when it comes in the Libra or Tula sign or rashi. That is the sun’s debilitation sign. In the month when the Sun is in its debilitation sign and the moon is absent (being the moonless night.) comes the darkest Amavasya. That is supposed to be the darkest hour when out of the two luminaries, the sun goes in its debilitation and the moon is altogether absent. Obviously it must be having the psychological effect. In order to ward off that darkest hour and boost up their morale, the ancients devised a novel method: lighting lamps to fight that darkest hour and blasting crackers to ward off the potential danger from the beasts and evil spirits. On this sacred night people worship Lakshmi.
